Barack Obama promises working women “equal pay”

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

The Washington Times and Associated Press report:

Seeking to draw female voters to his campaign, Sen. Barack Obama on Monday pledged to deliver equal pay to women, increase the child care tax credit and expand paid leave for new mothers….

On equal pay, Mr. Obama said his opponent, presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, opposed legislation earlier this year that would have made it easier for women to sue their employers for pay discrimination.

“I’ll continue to stand up for equal pay as president—Senator McCain won’t, and that’s a real difference in this election,” said the Illinois Democrat, who supported the bill.

“Equal pay” means more money for career women. Since federal “equal pay” legislation makes career women richer without making them more productive, career women’s “equal pay” can come only at someone else’s expense. Whose?

Venezuela is the new Cuba, they say. Her president Hugo Chavez is the new Castro. So we are told.

I wonder. Fidel Castro is a bad man, a brutal totalitarian dictator, a thug and a murderer. Mr. Chavez misses no opportunity to remind anyone who will listen how wonderful he thinks Castro is—which is alarming—or to refer to the United States as “the Empire.” However, words are not deeds.

Wisely said Euripides 2400 years ago, “The darkest hour is that before the dawn.”

In view of the broad, manifest failure of the George W. Bush administration and—more excusably but no less disappointingly—of the Republican Revolution of 1994, a growing number of conservative American traditionalists have begun to despair for the future of Western civilization. White people of European extraction, 28 percent of the world’s population as recently as 1950, are on course to fall to fewer than 10 percent by 2060. The populations of black Africa and of the Muslim world are booming; and, increasingly, those people not only populate their own ancestral lands but also colonize ours.

Barack Obama, George McGovern and the unreliability of summer polls

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Is Barack Obama a doctrinaire liberal of unreformed George McGovern stripe? Some conservatives seem to think so, and they are probably more or less right. However, they should not delude themselves. They should remember that three long months and two national conventions still separate us from Labor Day weekend when the real general-election campaign begins. Mr. Obama has heretofore had little reason to campaign as a conservative. He will have much reason to do so henceforth.
